Lost: The Cost of Living (S03EP05)
Posted November 02, 2006 at 08:36:10 AM by Bean in the Lost category
Eko has lots of flashbacks, all leading up to the final scene where he confronts his past demons. The smoke monster apparently takes on the appearance of Yemi, Eko's dead brother, and Eko explains how he has not sinned, but only done what he needed to survive. After that, Yemi says "You talk to me as if I am your brother" in an angry voice, upset with the "confession" and walks away. When Eko chases him, the smoke monster pops out, grabs him, and flings him around, eventually slamming him into the ground, killing him. As he dies, he told John "You're next." Opens up a lot of new theories on what smokey is. What do you think?
Jack and Juliet
Jack continues to try and manipulate Ben and Juliet, and apparently succeeds. After confronting Ben about the tumor, Ben reveals that this whole thing was a ploy to get Jack to operate on him. Now Jack thinks he has some power. Juliet also gets a secret message to Jack telling him to do the operation, but botch it, to get rid of Ben. Apparently there is dissent within the Others. But, who really knows if it's all just an even more elaborate con. At one point, Ben asks Jack if he believes in God. Jack asks the same question of Ben, and he replies "Two days after they found the tumor on my spine, a spinal surgeon fell from the sky." Finally puts a little weakness into Ben's character.
The Most Interesting Point
...was, in my opinion, that we finally found out what John saw back in S1 (I think) when the monster grabbed him. He was talking to Eko about it and said he saw a "bring light, it was beautiful." Of course, Eko replied "That's not what I saw." Again, opens up lost of possibilities. What do you think?
We basically learn NOTHING new about the mysterious eye-patch guy on the Pearl station monitors. Kinda frustrating - since that's what they played up in the previews. At any rate, there's definitely another player in the game now, and he left his fake eye in the Arrow hatch. Radzinsky?
Next week will be the mini-season finale. Pizza and beer at my house!

Just read a good comment about the tumor, and whether it's another con or not. "The problem I have with the idea that the 'tumor' is a con is that when Ben and Juliet were out of Jack's earshot at the funeral Ben asked her why she had showed Jack 'my x-rays'. If the tumor is not real wouldn't that be taking the con a little too far and into the sphere of role playing game?"

I would have thought you would have been pissed about the smoke monster, since it isn't explainable...
the juliet v. ben is a real nail-biter. i can't wait to see how it pans out. i understand that juliet might be bluffing about killing ben, but what purpose would it serve to bluff? i also wonder if those xrays are ben's. they could be doctored or someone else's and this is another ploy to manipulate jack to see where his loyaltees lay.
also, killing ben would break the hippocratic oath. i am not sure if jack would care or not... you guys would know much better.
what is a mini-season finale? does that mean that they are stopping for a few months, and will resume again later?
Bean (November 02, 2006 at 10:16:33 AM):
The smoke monster is nothing new though, I mean, we've seen it before. And they have thrown out clues as to it's explination.
I think Ben does have a spinal tumor, and was trying to manipulate Jack into operating on it.
Mini-season finale means after next week, the show will be onhiatus until Jan or Feb I think.

Here is a thought. Why was Juliet crying in the premier? I always assumed it was because her and Ben broke up. Maybe it was because she had just found out about his tumor.
This leads me to believe that Juliet is testing Jack to see if he is going to try and kill Ben. On the other hand, the fact that Ben confronts Juliet about the Tumor at the funeral suggests otherwise.
Brad (November 02, 2006 at 10:49:37 AM):
Also, Ben telling Jack that Juliet resembles his x-wife is proof that they were able to contact the outside world for info about the people on the pleane. Does it not?
Bean (November 02, 2006 at 11:32:29 AM):
Oh yeah, I think there's gotta be some kind of communication. Or else the other ARE tied in with smokey, who was able to read images and memories directly out of the head of the losties.

I can tell i don't know enough to speculate, like you guys can.
although, i will say i like this theory by brad:

See, I tend to think that the smoke can take the form of a horse, Hurley's imaginary friend, Jack's dad and all the people that Eko saw. It doesn't have to read minds to take the form.
Bean (November 02, 2006 at 02:45:04 PM):
I think the scene with the smoke in front of echo, where all of his memories are flashing through it indicate that it has SOME kind of "reading" ability. It was able to take on all kinds of forms in this past episode, all of which appeared in teh smoke back in S2. And if you think about it, it hasn't really gotten so detailed with any of the other manifestations... it just became a horse, or dave, or christian sheppard, not a whole cast of memories. I'm guessing this is because it had such a long time to sit there and scan Eko.
I think that smokey thinks it's God.

The smoke reminds me of the book Prey by Michael Crichton. If you haven't read it, I highly recommend it.
Bean (November 02, 2006 at 03:04:41 PM):
yeah - but they've specifically excluded the possibility that it's nanobots (and purgetory).
But they have referenced at various points in the show that dharma was experimenting with trying to controll bits of metal with EM fields. So maybe it's a cloud of iron particles controlled by a complex field. Woudl possibly tie in with the whole swan electromagnet.
foo (November 03, 2006 at 03:25:17 PM):
stop looking at me swan.
